O'Connell Firing Again
Bracknell Manics had to
play their Preliminary Cup match against Sunninghill Comrades of Division
1this weekend. Gary Sarney made his 100th appearance for the club today,
and proudly led the team onto pitch as captain.
Barry O'Connell was the first player to score,
a header from a Jones cross after 10 minutes.
Glenn Evans was next to receive a yellow card. Again the fiery tempered
right back was, caught in the middle of another argument with his opposition,
swiftly receiveing a booking and a 'naughty boy' telling off from the
referee.
Mark Robertson scored moments later to make
it 2-0, this time O'Connell assisting as the duo teamed up well upfront.
A minute later, some nice passing play and another chance for Bracknell
Manics as Garth Jones burst down the wing and shot over the bar.
Manics kept up the pressure, and more goals followed. O'Connell
would score the next two to earn his hatrick, and later Glenn Evans delivered
a corner onto Mark Gates head to tuck away.
Finally, Elliott Fairs scored a possible
nominee for goal of the season, charging down on goal and volleying the
ball into the net leaving the score 6-0 at the end of the half.
Manics seemed to have lost their composure in front of goal in the second
half, with over 25 chances on goal, Manics scored... none!
15 minutes into the second Manics made changes, Gavin Baker, Elliott Fairs,
and Mark Robertson came off to be replaced by Aaron Goddard, Paul Milner
and Alan Matthias.
A minute later Glenn Evans hit the crossbar with a stunning strike from
outside the box.
Paul Milner had a real chance to score, although making good contact with
the ball, Milner's shot rocketed into the keepers hands.
On the 75th minute, Ryan Warman pushed on but his shot was wide, as was
Alan Matthias left foot shot over the bar.
David Fenton was awol but nearly scored a goal in a 50/50 with the Comrades
keeper, the ball hurriedly cleared off the line.
Gareth Jones was causing problems on the right side 2 minutes later, weaving
in and out of players before striking over the bar from outside the box.
Even Gary Sarney on his 100th game for the club, couldn't seem to it the
target either as his two efforts in the second half flew over the bar,
leaving the final score 6-0.
Scorers: O'Connell (3)
Robertson (1) Gates (1) Fairs (1).
Assists: O'Connell (2) Jones (2) Robertson (1) Evans (1).
