Manic Men Flying in Cup
Manics
took on tough opposition this weekend in the first round of the Senior
Cup against old favourites Downshire Arms. Missing Gareth Jones and Ryan
Warman, not to mention Gary Sarney too, Manics were running on empty this
weekend, Steve Dennaford and Nikos Patsalides were the only subs on the
Manics bench.
Manics
were asleep in the first fifteen minutes. Downshire missed two golden
chances early on to take the lead, as the Manics laid back approach to
the game caused a great many problems to begin.
Manics finally had their first chance a minute later, Gavin Baker shooting
over the bar after receiving the ball from a poor clearance. Baker then
had another two chances as he found himself in acres of space down the
let wing, but could not take the Manics ahead.
Downshire’s long ball looked dangerous; still the Manics on the
back foot from Downshire’s counter attacks.
On the 20th minute Tim Roake connected well with an Evans cross, but headed
over the bar.
It
would be the 30th minute when Manics would take the lead, Tim
Roake with an amazing diving left foot volley out of the keepers
reach and into the goal from Mark Robertson’s well delivered cross
to make it 1-0.
In
the second half, Downshire equalised after 20 minutes of play, Mark Gates
was caught playing with the ball at the back, and when Downshire’s
pacy forward won the ball, he charged down on Robinson and scored to maker
it level.
Manics
had to dig deep after, lacking quality on the pitch after last weeks stunning
performance, Manics look lackluster. Good chances were missed on goal;
Mark Robertson’s left foot shot just wide of goal, Tim Roake’s
effort saved, and O’Connell hitting the bar.
All
the time Downshire fought back, after scoring Neil Tagg was drilling away,
spurring his team with every effort to win the ball.
But
after some relentless pressure and a bit of luck for the Manics, Glenn
Evans’ cross was met by David Fenton
who surprisingly took the Manics ahead to win with his left foot shot
luckily beating the keeper and finding the net to make it 2-1.
Scorers: Roake (1)
Fenton (1).
Assists: Robertson (1) Evans (1).
The Manics Man
of the Match went to Tim Roake and the Referee's player of the match went
to... Mark Gates!

to the fans who came to watch!
