Manics missed more key players again this week, but came the closest they
have so far this season to a similar squad from the week before. This
week, new signing Brent Marais would partner Mark Robertson up front,
with the rest of the squad remaining the same to last Sunday. Patsalides
joined Gary Sarney and a 'on the mend' Aaron Goddard for this important
game against Finchampstead. Up until now, Manics have failed to beat any
team higher than them in the division, but the stats were due to change
very soon...
Manics attacked early on, and it was clear that the Finch side were not
the same organised outfit they had played last season. Manics begin to
string passes together, and created their first chance after 10 minutes
with Glenn Evans shot just off target.
Finally the first goal came to the Manics after 25 minutes of play. And
who better to score other than Gareth Evans,
who had come so close in previous weeks, finally scoring his first for
the club. Evans linked onto a great lofted ball from Gareth Jones, before
beating the keeper to make it 1-0.
Four minutes later Mark Robertson won a free kick in outside the finch
box. Gareth Jones took it striking the bar and the ball bounced back out.
Turning into a frantic goal mouth scramble, Robertson's frantic swing
missed the ball, which fell to Gavin Baker who sliced it high and wide
over the goal.
Soon after, Manics continued to play good football on the right, Simon
Blay overlapped and whipped the low cross in towards Robertson but his
shot was saved well by the Finch keeper.
With fifteen minutes left of the first half, an own goal made it 2-0 to
the Manics after a cross from Gareth Evans ball was deflected off a Finch
defender and into his own net.
A minute later Gareth Jones half volley 15
yards out made it 3-0 as it was struck beautifully after a Glenn Evans
ball - the finch keeper had no chance.
Just before the break, Gavin Baker volleyed
the fourth goal and made it look easy. Mark Robertson was working hard
up front, and dribbling past a Finch defender, crossed the ball back to
Baker to score with ease.
Manics made a change at the break; Brent Marais would come off in a straight
swap for Gary Sarney. Manics started the second half positively and after
some good pressure, Gareth Evans found himself in a good position to score.
A square ball to Gareth Evans from Sarney, but his shot was off target.
Finchampstead kept fighting nevertheless and the hard work paid off. Always
looking dangerous up front, Finch avoided a diving challenge from Mark
Gates, and wide through on goal, easily poked the ball past Robinson into
the net.
Manics made another straight swap, Mark Robertson, came off to applause
from the sidelines for his hard work and Aaron Goddard would fill his
place up front.
After their goal, Finchampstead began to raise their game and play some
good football; it was clear Manics needed to kill the game soon to avoid
a Finch comeback.
On the 70th minute Ryan Warman made another Ashley Cole run from left
back, weaving in and out of players before rocketing the ball high over
the net.
Manics then created their 5th of the match. More great football, this
time on the left wing. Gavin Baker got the ball to Gareth Jones, whose
shot hit the post. The ball was hurriedly cleared and Gareth Evans launched
the ball back towards goal only for it to deflect off a finch player for
another own goal to stretch the lead.
But Finchampstead scored a second goal just 2 minutes later. Simon Blays
unfortunate luck enabled the Finch forward to steal the ball in a tangle,
and keeping good composure in front of goal made it 5-2.
Manics made a final substitution with 5 minutes remaining, Gareth Evans
would be replaced by Nikos Patsalides, but with the clock ticking it was
certain that Manics would be walking away with a well deserved 3 points
this week.
