Mark Gates played a significant part in Downshire Arms 2003-2004 campaign, and as captain for the side led them to complete the double. Prior to their success, a 'sideline argument' involving Mark Gates ended in turmoil for the club, and Mark Gates went on to sign for Bracknell Manics in April 2004.

Strong in the air and an uncompromising man marker, Mark Gates became a vital member of the Manics 2004-2005 back line, not to mention a firm favourite with the players at BMFC. In his first season with the club, Mark Gates was awarded 'Most Improved Player 2004-2005', 'Referee's Player of the Season 2004-2005', and 'Runners-up 2004-2005' summing up an all round excellent first season with the club.
